PSAT Offered To All On - Target Sophmores
CCSD will provide all current on-target 10th graders the opportunity to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) during October at the district's expense. Juniors interested in taking the exam will need to pay for the test at their school.

This tremendous opportunity is being offered to help more students become ready for college. Taking the PSAT and SAT exams is considered an indicator of student success and college readiness. Other indicators include enrolling in Honor and/or AP courses; completing four years of math and science; and passing the Nevada High School Proficiency Exams.

The results of the PSAT will identify your child's strengths and areas that need improvement. The examination will also serve as a practice for taking the SAT and the National Merit Scholarship Qualify Test (NMSQT) in your child's Junior year.

In advance, students will be provided with an Official Guide, PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin, to help them become familiar with the style and format of the test. Students may also visit the College Board website for additional information. (Calculators are acceptable tools for the math sections).

College Awareness Parent Information Sessions will be held for your convenience. You and your student are encouraged to attend a session to learn more about the PSAT and other important steps toward college. The dates and locations are different each year, but generally happen in late September with locations throughout the valley. Contact your child's counselor early in September for more information.

Virtual High School Offers Learning Options
Virtual High School presents a unique opportunity to earn a high school diploma or additional high school credits from the comfort of home, through a combination of TV/video and online classes and in a learning style that is most comfortable to the student. Virtual HS is available free to students who are enrolled full time. Course offerings include ADvanced Placement (AP) courses, foreign languages and a Personal Wellness course that meets the P. E. requirement.

Students enrolled at other high schools may take distance education courses from Virtual HS at a cost of $95 for each semester course. The enrollment fee is waived for Advanced Placement (AP) courses that are not available at a student's home school. Driver Education also is available through Virtual High School. For more information visit www.ccsdde.net, see your counselor or call Virtual HS at 855-8435.

External Credit Options Available
High School students may earn up to six credits outside the normal classroom setting, enabling them to accelerate completion of course work for graduation or make up classes in which they are credit deficient.

Students may apply up to six external credits units toward graduation, and not more than three of these external units may be in English, Math, Science or Social Studies. Credits from the following programs are accepted when successfully completed in accordance with CCSD guidelines: community service, correspondence courses, credit-by-exam, dual credit, educational travel, enrichment courses, and music equivalent credits.

Students must obtain pre-approval from their high school before registering for any external credit. See your child's counselor for details.

High School Students May Repeat Classes
High school students may repeat a course in which they would like to improve their grade. A student will not receive additional credit for the repeated course. The student's academic history will reflect the higher grade, and the lower grade will be replaced with a "repeated course" notation.
